Inside the “Highland Fling” Flower Show: 6 Unique Floral Designs by Karen Lindsay

At Flower Circus, we believe in celebrating creativity and innovation in floristry. For our online show in July 2025, we ventured to the picturesque town of Kilmarnock in the UK, the hometown of the iconic Johnnie Walker and the talented BFA (Brittish Florist Association) Florist of the Year, Karen Lindsay. Her charming flower shop, Flowers by Karen, served as the perfect backdrop for our floral showcase themed "Highland Fling."

Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone

Karen took this opportunity to push her creative boundaries. While her shop typically focuses on customer preferences and popular sales, the "Highland Fling" theme allowed her to explore the endless possibilities of floral design. With a vision to inspire fellow florists, Karen aimed to demonstrate how everyday flowers can be transformed into stunning arrangements.

To ensure everything went smoothly during the live show, our very own Morgan Douglas Nuth was on-site, providing technical support and moral encouragement. After a full day of preparations, the excitement built as we approached the showtime at 3 PM. Despite her nerves, Karen's passion for floristry shone through as she showcased her incredible designs.

Design 1: Tartan Frame of Nature

The first design featured the innovative Renewal foam from Smither’s Oasis UK. Karen crafted a striking arrangement using a picture frame as a focal point, surrounded by a lush base of greens and grasses - some even sourced from her own garden! The vibrant pink and blue flowers, including Chrysanthemums Etrusko and Cipria from Deliflor, added a delightful touch. At the heart of this design was the exquisite Lisianthus Alissa Blue from Lugt Lisianthus, perfectly framed to capture attention.

Design 2: Rustic Highland Harmony

Next, Karen showcased the OSHUN Pouch from New Age Floral, an ideal base for weddings and events. The design featured elegant Coryllus branches and a beautiful selection of spray roses from De Opstal, complemented by delicate Clematis.

This arrangement highlighted the versatility of floral design, perfect for any occasion.

Design 3: Toast to the Highlands

In a creative twist, Karen presented a breathtaking design using two wreaths stacked atop each other. This innovative approach allowed viewers to appreciate the beauty of the wreath from all angles. The vibrant pink flowers created a stunning visual, and Karen added a playful element by incorporating a bottle of Johnnie Walker at the center, with shot tubes cleverly integrated into the design. What a unique way to serve drinks!

Design 4: Floral Fling in a Box

The next creation was a Tartan Hatbox, where Karen harmonized the colors of the hatbox with the floral arrangement.

The standout feature was the stunning Campanula from de Waal, known for its exceptional quality and year-round availability. Topped with striking red roses, this design truly came to life, with the hatbox lid placed atop the arrangement for an extra special touch.

Design 5: Merida's Wedding Bouquet

Inspired by the character Merida from the movie Brave, Karen crafted a Tartan wedding bouquet designed for a strong woman. The base consisted of a ‘microphone’ bridal holder and a wreath covered in tartan fabric, resembling a shield. The addition of grasses introduced movement, making this bouquet a dynamic piece.

Design 6: Whispers of the Highlands

The final design was a hand-tied frame bouquet featuring an array of grasses and white flowers. This arrangement exuded a natural look, perfect for those who appreciate tartan but desire a more subtle color palette of white and green.

With so many stunning designs, it was challenging to choose a favorite. When Morgan was asked about his highlight of the show, he humorously replied, "Wearing a kilt!"
