From June 3 to 6, Flower Circus attended the Dutch Lily Days, where 13 top lily bulb exporters opened their test greenhouses to customers from around the globe. This event provided a unique opportunity to see how these exporters assess the quality and properties of their bulbs while exploring the future of the lily industry, focusing on resilience and availability.

Key Innovations in the Lily Industry

During our visit, we engaged with various lily exporters and breeders who shared exciting advancements in the lily sector. A standout trend is the rise of double lilies, which are quickly becoming popular among both lily enthusiasts and florists. These varieties include double oriental lilies, double LA lilies, and various hybrids.

New Sorting Systems for Clarity

As hybrid varieties continue to grow, the traditional classifications of lilies — Oriental, Asiatic, and Longiflorum — have evolved. Growers are now sorting lilies based on key characteristics such as pollen-free, non-fragrant, light fragrance, and strong fragrance. This new approach helps florists better meet customer preferences:

  • Pollen-free lilies are ideal for weddings and events, preventing pollen stains on clothing.

  • Non-fragrant varieties appeal to those who appreciate lilies without the strong scent.

  • Fragrant lilies cater to enthusiasts who enjoy the rich aroma of these flowers.

Breeding for Size and Quality

Breeders are dedicated to producing larger and more impressive blooms. Upon entering the greenhouses, we were welcomed by a stunning array of diverse varieties. Exporters planted different bulb sizes to assess the average flower yield per bulb, an important factor for commercial success. The more flowers produced, the more appealing they are to florists and consumers.

Sustainability in Lily Cultivation

Sustainability is another significant focus among breeders. They are increasingly developing varieties that show greater resistance to diseases and pests, making them not only more appealing but also easier to grow. This commitment reflects a growing trend in the floral industry toward eco-friendly practices.

The Process of Lily Breeding

Observing the extensive effort involved in breeding and growing lilies is truly impressive. Creating a new lily variety takes years of careful work, followed by additional time to cultivate bulbs for flower production. The introduction of double lilies marks a notable advancement, as they are predominantly pollen-free and become striking focal points when fully bloomed.

Our Favorite Lily

After an exciting week exploring countless varieties, choosing a favorite is tough. However, one thing is certain: lilies have a special place in our hearts. With a deeper understanding of these remarkable flowers, we are excited to continue sharing their beauty with the world.

For all lily enthusiasts and florists, stay tuned for more insights and updates from Flower Circus as we celebrate the beauty of lilies! 🌸
